A lot of people in the world afraid of spiders, Some spiders like tarantulas and Black Widow spiders are extremely deadly if a person gets bitten by one of them. Common spiders that you find at home, however, are not a threat to people. An uncommon fear of spiders is called arachnophobia and afflicts a large number of people. Because the fear is so common and because spiders look so creepy, they are often associated with Halloween.
To make a Halloween spider you will need...
Black wool, cardboard, black pipe cleaners, 2 ping pong balls (orange or white), paint or black marker pen, PVA craft glue.
To make a pom-pom, cut two circles of cardboard, the diameter depends on the size of the spider that you want to make. The circles should be equal to the size of the finished spider plus approximately 1cm for trimming, plus the diameter of the centre hole.
eg: For a pom-pom 10cm in diameter, the circles would
be
10cm + 1cm + 3cm (for centre hole) = 14cm.
I made a spider from cardboard circles sized 10cm in diameter, with a 3cm in diameter hole.
Wind lengths wool round and round the cardboard until the centre hole is completely filled up. It's quicker if you use double thickness yarn. Whent he hole gets too small thread the wool onto a needle so that you can continue.
Place the point of the pair of scissors between the two pieces of cardboard and cut around, keeping scissors between two circles of cardboard all the time. Using a double strand of wool, wrap round between the two circles of cardboard, knot firmly, and take away cardboard. Trim any straggly ends off the pom-pom. Leave a length of the wool attached to the spider for hanging it up.
Draw or paint thin lines for scary pupils onto the Ping-Pong balls. Part the wool on the 'front' of the pom pom and stick the two eyes in place. And glue the eyeballs together.
Paint or colour eight pipe cleaners black. Bend the pipe cleaner in the middle to create a 'knee', and bend the tip at right angles to form the foot. Bad the end of the leg in PVA glue, and push into the side of the spiders body deep into the wool.
Leave the glue to dry and then suspend your spider from spooky places to scare people.
